Forked vs Crouton

Two apps that respect the cook. One that remembers the cook’s changes.

Last verified August 2026 from each company’s own listings, not from another app’s comparison blog.

Crouton is the most complete Apple-native recipe manager: beautifully built, deep in the kitchen, and it runs everywhere in the Apple ecosystem including the Watch. Anyone comparing these two has good taste.

Where Crouton wins

  • Apple Watch, Vision, and Mac apps.
  • iCloud sync with no account to create.
  • Shopping list through Reminders, meal planning that can build itself.
  • Hands-free step mode, multi-timers, cookbook scanning.
  • Pay once for the app.

Where Forked wins

  • Lineage. Crouton can store your variation. It can’t tell you it came from somewhere, or show you the four other versions your household cooks.
  • A shared library that can’t be clobbered. Crouton’s sharing is iCloud-shaped: a shared file everyone edits. In Forked, edit someone else’s recipe and it becomes your fork, with theirs untouched.
  • Ask on the card. Crouton’s editor is manual and excellent. Forked’s Ask bar rewrites the recipe as data, then offers just-for-now, save, or fork.
  • Dinner from this kitchen. Inspiration reads the library and offers Like or Explore. Crouton does not generate from your cooking.
  • Import breadth. Social video, ChatGPT share links, and one-pass migration from Paprika and Recipe Keeper.
  • Nothing important is behind a second paywall. Crouton’s AI import sits in a separate subscription from its main unlock, which surprises people.

Be honest about

Crouton runs on Watch, Vision and Mac, syncs over iCloud with no account to create, and you pay for it once. We’re iPhone-only with a sign-up and a subscription. For a lot of Apple-ecosystem cooks that’s the whole decision.
